As a dad who has to work I miss out on a lot of the running and jumping play time during the day. I often only get to see my kids at the end of the day when they are tired and when there is only enough time to have dinner and then get them ready for bed.
It is a tricky balance to work to provide for a family and to also be present to raise them. I also think it is strange that I pay Day-care centre staff to raise my boy without really knowing them or what they are actually teaching him. I am sure he has already seen and learnt things that I have had no input into. The lyrics from “Cat’s in the cradle” jumped into my head:
“And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home, Dad
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then”
I know little people are like little parrots. They learn by copying. I keep on thinking I need to be a good example and role model to my kids. It is just hard to be a good example when I am not home when they are awake.
Well tonight you will be glad to know that I sat down with my boy and we read some books together. It wasn’t the kind of running around outside awesome fun time I would love to share with him but it was still nice to have him sit on my lap and for us to have a giggle.
